June was a month for bunkering down for some grant, residency and exhibition applications, but also for running another Light House and Totems workshop with heaters on and soup warming.
I love to see what people create and how they go on from our workshops to bigger, more ambitious projects afterwards. This week, I received a great photo from Tammy Crannis, a patron of the Bakehouse Studio’s Totem Workshop and was delighted to hear about her creative ceramic journey.
“Ceramics began for me at primary school where my anticipation for the masterpiece I created turned to outrageous disappointment as my pig shattered in the kiln. I was sure I loved the experience more than my classmates and felt cheated that mine was the one to explode. I had unfinished business with ceramics so when choosing subjects for my creative arts course I had to try again. Textiles continued to be my passion through uni as I could play with colour, as Ceramics offered no commercial glazes or underglazes, and only 2 dull glazes to choose from.
Much later, in an attempt to make homeschooling fun through Covid, I ordered a bag of clay. I had fun, probably more than my son did, while my husband did not appreciated a dining table full of mud. I found a night class, gathered some friends and discovered underglazes, beautiful coloured glazes and weekend workshops.
The Totem Workshop at The Bakehouse Studio solved the problem of displaying sculptures by enabling some outdoor garden sculptures.” Tammy
The Bakehouse Studio was cosy in June with lots of activity and fabulous work created at the Winter Solstice and Totems Workshops and a vibrant group of participants at the weekly Open Studio sessions.
It is always good to see the progress of those who utilise the Open Studio space regularly, to work on their own projects. Vicki Klay, (great name), has been a patron of the Bakehouse Studio since 2020 and holds a Bakehouse Studio membership which enables her to come along to all Open Studio Sessions during the week. At the moment she is working on a series of fungi-inspired sculptural works. Vicki is pictured below at last Friday afternoon’s Open Studio session and shares here, what she loves about her experience.
'The Bakehouse has opened up a different world for me since retiring and I am pursuing something I really enjoy. It’s my happy place where I can be amongst like-minded people who also enjoy experimenting with clay.
My current project at Open Studio is a carry-on from the Fungi & Coral Sculpture Workshop that I participated in recently. I found it very inspiring and the study of coral, fungi and lichen fascinating.

Bakehouse Studio is very excited to have been selected to exhibit at the Sydney Ceramics Market this year which will be held at Carriageworks as an expanded two day event on the weekend of October 19-20. Bakehouse Studio member Sara Buchner and I are very busy designing our big 2 x 4 meter stand, ordering materials to make it and producing lots of work to fill it with. There will be a few other Bakehouse artists exhibiting too - more to come about this exciting event in the coming months.
With the End of Financial Year the Bakehouse library has a few new inspiring art and design books, a couple of which you can see pictured below. Books are such a great source of inspiration. Come check them out.
New work will continue to be exhibited at the beautiful Winmark Art Gallery at Winmark Wines, Broke. Other work for sale is also visible in the online gallery shop.
The next available Totems II workshop will be held over two Saturdays - 27th July and August 10 from 10am - 2pm focussing on banksia flowers and seed pods. Book your space here.
