NEWS from Lisa: Autumn Inspo
One of my favourite places that never ceases to fire my imagination is Clay Gulgong - a unique clay festival set in the historical gold mining town of Gulgong. This is where, every two years, Bernadette Mansfield @mansfieldceramics brings together an incredible group of international and Australian ceramic artists who not only demonstrate their many skills, but also generously share their knowledge, experience and expertise.
This year we were in awe of the expertise shared by Keith Brymer Jones from The Great Pottery Throwdown UK, Chanakarn (Punch) Semachai from Thailand, Ruth Ju-Shih Li from Taiwan and Josh Copus from the US to name just a few. I was also delighted to have Deb Wilkes, Cally Winter-Bruer, Jim O’Brien and Tracey Wigg join me for this year’s event and together our work under the Bakehouse Studio banner formed part of the Shopfront Trail where local business owners collaborated with artists to display their work. Many thanks to Amber from Mana On Mayne for hosting us.
The week was topped off by Picnic Day at the Mansfield Property, ‘Morning View’. This amazing place is home to the late Janet Mansfield’s studio, personal art collection, collection of personal work, past Clay Gulgong Masters’ work, woodfire and other kilns, library of ceramic books and magazines.
I’m back in the studio now, totally fired up for my next two exhibitions at Sydney Build Expo and Scratchley @Scratchley Fort Scratchley, Newcastle.
In the studio over the past couple of months, I’ve been experimenting with more abstract figures. Below is an image of a maquette for sun goddess Soline, glazed now and ready for scaling up to the height of about two metres. This month you can also see more of my Gustav Klimt-inspired sculptures in a five-totem Goddess Garden for the Sculptures at Scratchley Art Prize in Newcastle, opening May 11. Also completed this month is Vienna, an abstract black and white totem to be exhibited from May 2-4 by Artiere at the Sydney Build Expo in Darling Harbour.
Exhibitions in May:
Sydney Build Expo - ICC Sydney Exhibition Centre, May 1 & 2
Sculptures at Scratchley - Fort Scratchley, Newcastle, May 11- 26
Don’t forget this month’s morning tea fundraiser celebrating Australian Design Centre’s 60 years of support for the craft and design community. Each paying guest will receive a handmade cup/mug along with details of the maker. It’ll be a hot ticket event (at $120) with special guest speakers and a celebrity host.
